Hammock Stands
It’s not always possible to find two coconut trees spaced perfectly apart to hang your hammock. It’s also sometimes dangerous to hang a hammock from eyebolts on your porch ceiling. The last thing you would want is for a friend or family member to become injured when lying on an improperly secured hammock. That’s why so many are using stands (sometimes called frames), which provide a strong and sturdy alternative.
Another advantage to using a frame is that they are easily moved. If a storm is brewing, you can carry it to a shielded area. If the sun has shifted and you can’t read your novel without looking directly into the sun, it’s no problem, just move the stand across the yard to the nearest shade tree. A regular hammock takes time to dismantle and then reassemble at the new location.
People are using frames on their decks, out in their yards or poolside to offer support for their hammocks.
Types
There are three major types of stands available on the market today. Each stand has its advantages and disadvantages. You can find a stand for every size and type of hammock available. Your choice will probably come down to which stand offers the look that you want in your home or garden area.
Stainless Steel Stands
A stainless steel stand is perfect when weather is an issue. Stainless steel won’t rust when exposed to moisture. These stands will stay looking brand new for years to come. Their only disadvantage is that they cost more than other stands.
Metal Stands
These are the most affordable type of stand. They are ideal when weathering isn’t much of a concern and when those using the hammock don’t weigh much. They are not as strong as the other two popular types of stands. As a tip, when you’re shopping for a metal frame, look to purchase one that is heavy gauge steel. Remember that the higher the gauge of steel, the lower the strength of the stand. Always look at the manufacturer’s weight statements and make sure that this stand is capable of holding the weight of those who will be using the hammock. Remember to take into consideration that often a parent and a child, or several children may want to use it at the same time.
Wood Stands
Wooden frames weather quite well. They provide the most variety of designs and styles. A wooden stand may require an annual coat of varnish or stain in order to protect the wood from aging.
Assembly
The vast majority of stands come unassembled but manufacturers of today have become very good at designing products with simple, quick assembly instructions. Most do not even require any special tools and come with all the hardware you will need.
Always make sure that the stand you want to purchase will work with your hammock. By checking with the manufacturer first, you will have that assurance. |
